Fortune and Fame at the Eisteddfod

Updated: Jun 2, 2023

Fortune and Fame writer David Collins enjoyed a day out in the West Wales sunshine recently, with a visit to the Urdd Eisteddfod in Llandovery in beautiful Carmarthenshire.

Urdd Gobaith Cymru provides opportunities for children and young people across Wales to take part in a range of experiences through the medium of Welsh. The eisteddfod lasts a whole week, with visitors and young competitors coming from all over Wales to sing and perform.

David, a keen Welsh speaker, was in attendance in Llandovery to cover the latest Football Association of Wales squad announcement for ProstInternational.

The squad announcement reunited us with two Fortune and Fame ‘old boys’ as David engaged with Wales boss Robert Page and current under 21's manager, Matt Jones.

Both are former clients of Jonathan Power and feature in the pages of Fortune and Fame.

Page explained to the gathered journalists and scribes, including David, that he was delighted to be able to visit other parts of Wales - as a way of thanking those members of the ‘Red Wall’ of Wales fans who travel to the capital from areas such as West Wales, to cheer his boys on. He also discussed individual aspects of his squad selection with representatives of the media.

Jones was also pleased to lend his support to the Fortune and Fame project as our picture shows.

The former Leeds United and Leicester City midfielder from Llanelli won 13 caps for Wales between 1999 and 2003.

David also spoke to a number of ’eisteddfodwyr’ (supporters of an Eisteddfod) about our book.

There was great interest across the ‘maes’ (field), with particular enthusiasm from the guys at the Football Museum for Wales, which is being developed in Wrexham.

David has collaborated with the museum in the past and was delighted to discuss the book with them.

Perhaps our book might end up a museum exhibit in the not too distant future?

Fortune and Fame is now on sale, with proceeds donated to Velindre Cancer Centre.
